Movie Mornings, Sultana Cookies & Yarn Weaving

I decided to break this post into two halves, since it was getting rather lengthy šŸ™‚ Sometimes I like rainy days because I feel like it gives me a valid excuse to not go anywhere šŸ™‚ I think there is a lot of pressure nowadays to always be going somewhere with your kids, but sometimes after a busy week, everyone just needs to stay in.

This morning, I made some popcorn and we watched The Karate Kid. I had never seen it before and my friend recommended it. It was a good balance of interesting for kids/not mind-numbing for adults. I think warm popcorn is one of my favourite cosy foods šŸ™‚ My daughter always waits until I offer her crisps or popcorn and then asks for both and then steals the bowl of popcorn from me and announces she’s finishing it herself šŸ™‚

I was in the mood to bake again, so we tried another new recipe for biscuits. The original recipe included lemon zest, but I didn’t have any, so we replaced it with orange zest. The biscuits came out like Easter biscuits with sultanas in them. I love anything baked with nutmeg and cinnamon in it and we increased the quantities of each spice šŸ™‚ It wasn’t like a typical cookie dough and I was curious as to how it would turn out. The girls said they tasted more like pastry than cookies and I had to agree, but the flavour was good and they were eaten by everyone (which is rare in our house.)

We did the final craft from the girls’ art box. I think I enjoy it even more than they do and I’m already looking forward to the next one arriving. I had to wind string around little looms for them and secure it with tape. Then, the girls added yarn and wove it in and out of the string. I like the fact that the set-up is easy, but they get a lot from it and learn new skills šŸ™‚ You could add other materials if you liked and could weave wool too, but the girls chose to make two-toned yarn ones. They are now brightening up our already artwork-laden kitchen šŸ™‚

I did lots of cooking today for the week. I made potato bread, flatbreads and soup. I always go into cooking frenzies and then I’m filled with regret afterwards when I have to wash every dish in the house šŸ™‚ By the time I finished doing that, I was in need of strong coffee and peace in the garden. Thankfully, the weather had dried up and I sat outside and wrote for a little while to clear my busy head šŸ™‚ As always, it was interrupted, but I think you just have to snatch those moments whenever you can šŸ™‚
