Activities to do with Kids at Halloween

I thought I’d share a list of ideas of Halloween-themed activities to do with kids for the remaining few days of the holidays. Sometimes it’s helpful to have them compiled somewhere as a reminder of things to do when you’re at a loss for what to do 🙂

1. Tell spooky stories in the dark with a torch. Get your kids to make up their own stories for you too. I find that the novelty of holding a torch under their faces keeps my kids sitting for longer than usual 🙂

2. Make s’mores by toasting marshmallows on a fork over a candle. Put them between two cookies with some chocolate (Rolos go well :)) Or you can use the toasted marshmallows alongside hot chocolate.  You can use Mikado sticks as skewers for your marshmallows too.

3. Set up a snack station and have a spooky movie in the dark, pretending it’s a cinema screening. Make party food even if it’s only for yourself and your children.

4. Collect autumnal leaves and make leaf rubbings by placing them under paper and colouring over them with the side of a crayon. Use the leaves to print with paint too. You can also paint the leaves and incorporate them into your artwork, for example white leaves could be ghosts or black ones could be bats. Add other materials to your creations 🙂

5. Go on a Halloween decoration hunt. See who can spot the scariest or most elaborate displays in your area.

6. Alternative pumpkin decoration. If you’re fed up with pumpkin carving or can’t be bothered with the process, decorate a pumpkin in a different way. You can buy packs of pumpkin accessories now in the pound shop, etc. You could make spray paint glitter pumpkins instead or light colourful candles and let the wax drip down the sides of the pumpkin. (Maybe don’t let your kids do this one.)

7. Make a piñata out of a cereal box if you don’t have one. Use a brush handle to break it open 🙂 You can also make miniature ones using toilet roll tubes. Just fill one with sweets and wrap in tissue to look like mummies. Add googly eyes to them. Kids like having their own personalised piñatas 🙂

8. Have a Halloween hunt. Hide plastic insects as well as sweets for a scarier version (this would probably scare me more than the kids.) You could do a Halloween pass the parcel with scary surprises hidden in each layer 🙂

9. Have a glow sticks disco in the dark. Make Halloween playlists with your kids and compromise with a mixture of songs they like and songs you can stand 🙂

10. Make a Halloween nature trail. Kids can earn sweets by finding a list of autumnal items along the way, for example, an acorn, a red leaf, a twig that looks like a broom. It’s a good way to educate them about nature too 🙂
